2001-10-07 - 9:28 p.m. - bored and lonely and baseball
today i talked on the phone to my parents who are in north carolina for a few days. i told my dad how horrified i was that we 'shut off the lights' in our first new millitary endeavor. it seemed horrible and disgusting to me. but then he told me how he heard ont he radio that our military did it by dropping a shit load of wires and foil on and in the power plants so that everything shorted out and nothing got permanently destroyed. okay, if thats true its a little bit better.so as all this ugliness unfolds before us here are some joyous things i found on television watching baseball today.
barry bonds hitting his 73rd home run and kissing his son, who was a bat boy, on the cheek after crossing home plate. im so glad he broke the record, it made my weekend.
ricky henderson not wanting to play in his last game of the season for fear of lessening the moment of Tony Gwynn's last major league baseball game ever. then tony gwynn convincing him to play and ricky henderson becoming the 25 player to have 3000 career hits. amazing.
watching tony gwynn and cal ripken jr. retire. ive been following their careers since i was old enough to remember with the exception of a few years in high school and college when i was too punk rock to watch baseball.
watching eric davis, one of the first athletes i ever looked up to back when he played in cinncinati. the guy who everytime he stepped up to bat we would get excited and realize that the game wasn't over...watching him take his last at bat in major leauge baseball.
three players i grew up with retired today and it was kind of beautiful in the respect everyone felt for them, but sad at how quickly years are gone.
so there is my diary entry for the day, almost entirely devoted to baseball. because that is what i want to think about tonight. i dont want to think about all of the destruction we are inflicting on a foreign country right now. i just wanna think about barry bonds, ricky henderson, tony gwynn, cal ripken jr. and eric davis.
